Just look up at the
truly dark skies over Land Between The
Lakes National Recreation Area.
There are so few lights in this 170,000
acre nature viewing area that the skies
truly look darker and clearer than most
anywhere else.
Our desire is to
introduce each visitor to the world
around us all. We hope to inspire
each to a lifelong interest in the
experience gained from viewing the skies
above us as well as the science of
astronomy. We will engage the
visitor with the environment created by
our 40 foot dome and our 84 seat
theater. We strive to immerse the
visitor in earth science and thereby
allow them to embrace their curiosity
about the world within which we find
ourselves. Our hope is that they
will continue exploring on their own as
they leave this place.
Did you know?
The 40 foot (12.2
m) diameter dome of the Golden Pond
Planetarium weighs approximately 3,000
pounds, and if you lined up all the
perforations in a row, with no spaces in
between, they would extend 33.4 miles.
There are
approximately 20,348,928 perforations in
the hemisphere of the dome. You
could fit 249,945,112 plain M&M's inside
the dome. Sweet!
There is plenty
of room for you and your family to be
comfortable as you see, hear, and enjoy
the excitement shared by our
interpreters as they conduct the exiting
programs offered at the Golden Pond
Planetarium.
The Planetarium is a place
to inspire the next generation of
explorers by igniting their imagination
and making them wonder why... the first
step of discovery.
What is a Planetarium?
It is a place
where the night sky is created without
the issues of dust and other forms of
pollution, cloud cover, or light
pollution, using a very special machine
call a star instrument. This very
large and very expensive projector can
recreate very accurate representations
of the night sky anywhere in the world
on any date in history.
This place is a
domed theater with controlled
temperature (cool in summer and warm in
winter) and very comfortable high back
seats...be careful of you may be tempted
to close your eyes. Do so and you
might miss animated phenomena such as
meteors or comets as they streak to and
fro. Our special effects are
supported by projection of video,
special effect projectors, and computer
based special effects. In addition
to the visual effects, the sound effects
add a great deal to the experience in
the Planetarium as well.
Most of our
shows are about 40 minutes in length.
They are usually on subjects related to
astronomy and use the star instrument
along with other special effects
projectors to re-create celestial
effects. Some of the shows are on
other earth science based subjects such
as weather phenomenon and other similar
subjects.
