Bugle Corps
Program
One
of the Volunteer Program’s most significant contributions is the
establishment of the Bugle Corps Program. The Bugle Corps, a group of
trained volunteers, was formed in the spring of 2001 to assist LBL staff
in monitoring the visitation and wildlife in the Elk & Bison Prairie (EBP)
wildlife viewing area. Bugle Corps Volunteers help the ever increasing
number of annual visitors to the EBP (over 135,000 last year) have a safe
and enhanced learning experience. The Corps membership grows as frequent
EBP visitors decide to try the Volunteer experience, receive training and
put on the trademark bright orange Bugle Crops vest. The group currently
consists of members who work either as individuals or couples. The task
of the Bugle Corps volunteer is three fold.
·
To
provide interpretive assistance to the visitors, helping to identify
viewing opportunities, providing show and tell with antlers, horns, hair
and other Prairie items.
·
To
provide increased safety for both the visitor and EBP wildlife by
monitoring visitors to ensure safe viewing practices.
·
To
monitor the EBP wildlife, providing the Forest Service Biologists with
written comments of activity & condition via a daily log.
The Bugle Corps
activity has assisted the LBL in receiving special recognition awards from
the Forest Service and the Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation.

Monitoring and support takes many forms
