Alternative Break
Volunteer Program
|
|
Each year as many as
80 volunteers from universities and colleges across the nation
participate in LBL's Alternative Break Volunteer Program. A few
schools that have volunteered under this program include:
Boston University, University of Vermont,
Berea College, University of Florida,
University of Illinois, Transylvania University,
University of Miami, Texas A & M University, and Eastern
Illinois University. |
| LBL offers students
opportunities to volunteer on community service projects during their
spring, fall and summer breaks. Since 1995, LBL has been hosting
Alternative Break groups seeking to volunteer on a variety of outdoor
service projects, such as trail work, tree plantings, clean-up
efforts, habitat restoration and facility improvements. Within
this setting of community service at LBL, students often develop a
better understanding the environmental issues related to management of
public lands. |

The alternative
Break Volunteer Program has many immeasurable benefits that result
from the partnership between LBL and student volunteers:
Student volunteers receive orientation, training, free housing,
educational opportunities, learning as a result of the experience from
doing projects and a diversity of outdoor service projects. |
| LBL staff develop
close working relationships with students and are able to make great
strides in accomplishing numerous projects with limited resources. |
|
| |
LBL visitors benefit
from safer, cleaner lake access areas, enhanced trails, improved
facilities and services. |
