History of LBLA
The Land Between The Lakes Association "Friends of LBL" was incorporated in July of 1983 and became a recognized 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization in early 1984.

Since its inception,
Friends of LBL has worked with its federal partners to assist in attracting and educating visitors to the LBL and to provide funding gap assistance. From 1983 to 1999, Friends of LBL partnered with the Tennessee Valley Authority (TVA) to carry out its mission. In October 1999, Congress passed legislation that transferred stewardship authority for LBL TVA to the USDA Forest Service. The Association looks forward to a long and productive relationship with its current partner—the Forest Service.

Major Highlights
Friends of LBL has involved itself in numerous special projects. Capital improvements include a campground shower house, a horse barn, animal enclosures at the Nature Station and an Elk and Bison handling corral at the Elk and Bison Prairie. Examples of wildlife restoration projects include assistance with a Bald Eagle hacking program, a Red Wolf captive breeding program, annual litter clean ups, and the return of elk to Western Kentucky after a more than 150 year absence. In 1997 and ’98, Friends of LBL teamed up with the Kentucky Arts Council to work on an oral history project called Connecting People and Place. The project celebrated the rich cultural heritage of the region formerly known as Between the Rivers. In June of 2001 Friends of LBL launched the LBL Bugle Corps—an organized group of trained volunteers that help monitor visitation to LBL’s very popular Elk & Bison Prairie.
